A case study on the design of memory care communities.
Longcreek Assisted Living and Memory Care
Location: Sunnyvale, TX
Architecture Firm: Pi Architects
Year Completed: 2017
Longcreek Assisted Living and Memory Care features many amenities that focus on three factors of health: Cognitive Support, Wellness, and Fitness. Under these categories, residents are able to participate in activities like memory games, reminiscing and discussion groups, language study, music programs, art classes, religious services, exercise classes, dance classes, and gardening club to name a few. In order to support all of these activities, the community has many different common areas including an enclosed courtyard, several living areas, a salon, a private dining room, and a large recreation space. The studio bedroom is recommended higher for memory care residents, as the one bedroom may become overwhelming. Both the assisted living and memory care communities have their own spaces but are all connected by the enclosed courtyard which makes getting to either side of the building relatively painless.

Stonecrest of Troy
Location: Troy, MI
Owner: NorthPoint Development
Operator: Stonecrest Senior Living
Interior Design/Architecture Firm: Pi Architects
Total Building Area: 77,000 sq. ft.
Stonecrest of Troy features a craftsman style design equipped with modern finishes, and eclectic touches. The goal of this design was to resemble a hotel or resort to give residents a sense of luxury and excitement. Color was used throughout the design to help with wayfinding, some areas with blue accents and others with red. Amenities include a movie theater, fitness center, a salon, a private dining room, an activity room and various common areas for lounging and learning. (EFA Magazine, 2018). The studio bedroom is recommended for residents with who fall under memory care while the assisted living residents tend to gravitate more towards the shared room. The design was kept exciting through the use of decorative accents that play against the dominantly neutral color pallet.
